I came across Demon City Oni Goroshi randomly, without any expectations. And honestly, I enjoyed watching it. But at the same time, I couldn’t stop thinking about how this movie could have been so much better if the makers had explored its characters and story more deeply.
Released in 2025, Demon City Oni Goroshi is a Japanese action-revenge film that focuses on brutality, speed, and dark atmosphere. It succeeds as a fast-paced revenge thriller—but it also feels like a missed opportunity to become something truly unforgettable.
Sakata Shuhei is falsely accused of killing his wife and child. After a failed suicide attempt, he is sent to a prison hospital, where he spends 15 years of his life—physically disabled and mentally shattered.
After his release, a turning point allows Sakata to regain his strength. What follows is a violent and relentless journey of revenge against the people who destroyed his life. The story includes brutal confrontations, emotional loss, and a plot twist that genuinely comes out of nowhere.
One of the biggest strengths highlighted in this Demon City Oni Goroshi review is the movie’s pacing. It starts quickly and never slows down. There’s no unnecessary filler, making it perfect for viewers who want a short, intense action experience.

The main issue is the lack of character backstory. The film never properly explains:
How Sakata was trained
Why he is so powerful
How he manages to defeat so many enemies alone
If the movie had a longer runtime—around 2 hours 30 minutes—and explored Sakata’s past, training, and family life, the emotional impact would have been far stronger.
Some action scenes also push realism too far. Certain moments feel almost superhuman, which breaks immersion. A more tactical and grounded approach would have made the revenge feel more believable.
The emotional connection between Sakata and his daughter is also underdeveloped. Even after their reunion, meaningful dialogue is missing, making the emotional stakes feel lower than they should be.

I found this movie while casually searching for something to watch during a meal—and I genuinely liked it.
However, I strongly believe this movie could have been 10 times better than what we got. The plot itself is good, and the twist genuinely shocked me. I didn’t see it coming at all.
It also made me question the villain’s logic: if they knew Sakata Shuhei would eventually come back for revenge, why didn’t they kill him properly in the first place? That question stayed in my mind even after the movie ended.
In the end, Demon City Oni Goroshi is a good revenge movie, but not a great one. It’s fast, brutal, and entertaining—but emotionally incomplete
