Should You Watch One Piece in Release Order or Chronological Order?

If you’re watching One Piece for the first time, I highly recommend following the release order. This is the way the story was originally intended to be experienced. You’ll understand the plot better, connect more deeply with the characters, and enjoy the emotional moments without getting confused.

If you’re watching One Piece for the second time or beyond, then you can watch it in chronological order or simply revisit your favorite arcs. That’s exactly what I did during my second watch. Since I already knew the story, I jumped straight into the arcs I enjoyed the most and had a great time revisiting my favorite moments.

For most new fans, however, release order is by far the best way to experience One Piece.

This is the current and ongoing saga in the One Piece anime.

Filler Episodes (Skip or Watch?)

One Piece has one of the lowest filler percentages among long-running anime, which is one of the reasons it’s easier to binge compared to series like Naruto or Bleach.

From my perspective, you can safely skip the filler episodes, OVAs, and TV specials if you’re watching One Piece for the first time. They’re not required to understand the main story and can sometimes interrupt the pacing.

Instead, focus on the canon storyline and catch up with the anime. You can always come back later to watch the filler episodes, OVAs, and TV specials if you want more adventures with the Straw Hat Pirates.

That said, there are a few exceptions. The G-8 Arc (Episodes 196–206) is one of the best filler arcs in anime and is highly recommended by many fans, including me.

Netflix Live Action – When Should You Watch It?

I recommend watching the Netflix live-action adaptation after you’ve finished the East Blue Saga (Episode 61) at the very least. By then, you’ll be familiar with the characters and the story, making it much more enjoyable.

THE ONE PIECE Remake – Should You Watch It Instead of the Original?

THE ONE PIECE is an upcoming remake by WIT Studio that aims to retell the story with modern animation, improved pacing, and updated visuals.

It will begin with the East Blue Saga and adapt the series from the beginning.

Should you wait for it instead of watching the original?

My answer is no.

I don’t recommend waiting for the remake because it will take many years before it catches up to the current anime. By that time, the original One Piece anime may already be close to ending—or even finished.

If you’re planning to start One Piece now, watch the original anime. Once the remake is released, you can always go back and enjoy it with its improved animation and pacing.
