1. Vermeil in Gold Manga Artist Yōko Umezu Dies
Not every news story from the anime industry can be exciting, and sometimes we hear news that makes us sad. Today, we got that kind of news from the industry.
The manga artist of Vermeil in Gold, Yōko Umezu, has sadly passed away. The editors of Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine announced the news on August 12.

According to the announcement, Umezu died on July 7 due to an ischemic stroke, also known as a cerebral infarction. A private funeral was held and was attended only by close relatives.
Yōko Umezu was known for illustrating Vermeil in Gold, which was written by Kōta Amana. The manga also received a TV anime adaptation in 2022, bringing the series to a much wider audience.
It is always sad to see a talented creator from the manga industry pass away, especially when their work has brought entertainment and memories to so many fans.
We send our condolences to Yōko Umezu’s family, friends, colleagues, and fans.
2. Good News for Anime Fans From Crunchyroll
Now, moving to some good news for anime fans.
Crunchyroll has announced that it is collaborating with the automotive app distribution platform Appning by FORVIA to allow its service to stream in select vehicles.
The collaboration will launch with BMW and MINI vehicles, before expanding across the wider BMW Group and eventually to more than 40 automotive brands. The service is expected to reach markets including North America, Latin America, India, Asia, Europe, and Australia.
According to the information surrounding the service, Crunchyroll will follow the same safety restrictions as other video-streaming platforms. Video playback will be disabled while the vehicle is moving and will become available when the vehicle is parked.
So, anime fans can potentially enjoy their favorite shows through their car’s entertainment system, but not while driving.
This is another interesting step for Crunchyroll as the platform continues to expand anime beyond traditional devices like smartphones, TVs, and gaming consoles.
3. Webtoon-Based Live-Action Series Mousetrap Will Premiere on Netflix on August 28
Netflix is preparing to premiere its new mystery thriller series Mousetrap, which is based on the Korean webtoon Field Mouse, on August 28.
Netflix has already unveiled the teaser trailer and poster for the upcoming series, giving fans a better look at what they can expect from the adaptation.
The series stars Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu in the lead roles and follows a mystery involving identity theft and a dangerous search for the person responsible.
The story looks quite interesting from the trailer and poster, and the combination of a popular webtoon source material and a strong cast has already created some hype around the series.
Mousetrap will have 10 episodes, and now we have to wait until August 28 to see whether the series actually lives up to the hype.
4. Eren the Southpaw Manga Ends
Finally, we have news about Eren the Southpaw.
Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ has published the final chapter of Kappi and nifuni’s Eren the Southpaw manga. The latest run ended with Chapter 220, which was released on August 12.

The manga’s 26th and final compiled volume is scheduled to be released on September 4, 2026. Fans can also read the manga through official platforms such as MANGA Plus by Shueisha.
The first season of the anime adaptation aired in 2026, introducing the story to many new anime fans. With the manga now reaching the end of its latest run, fans who enjoyed the anime may want to check out the manga to explore more of the story.
