Detective Conan’s Ran Mōri Voice Actress Wakana Yamazaki Dies at 61

The anime industry was shocked after talent agency Aoni Production announced that legendary voice actress Wakana Yamazaki passed away on April 18 at the age of 61. According to reports, her relatives held a private funeral service.

For many anime fans, Wakana Yamazaki was the voice of Ran Mōri from Detective Conan. She had voiced the beloved heroine since the anime first premiered in 1996, making her one of the most recognizable voices in anime history. Her emotional performances helped make Ran one of the most loved female characters in long-running anime.

During her medical treatment earlier this year, veteran voice actress Akemi Okamura temporarily replaced her role. Fans later learned that Okamura would officially continue voicing Ran Mōri after Yamazaki’s passing.

However, Wakana Yamazaki’s career was much bigger than just Detective Conan. She also voiced:

  • Meiko Akizuki in Marmalade Boy
  • Koan in Sailor Moon R
  • Ruri-Hime in Mononoke
  • Nene in Samurai Warriors
  • Nojiko in One Piece

Interestingly, she even temporarily voiced Nami in One Piece episodes 70–79 while the regular voice actress, Akemi Okamura, was on maternity leave. This small but memorable detail showed how respected Yamazaki was inside the anime industry.

For nearly three decades, her voice became part of anime history, and many fans grew up hearing her performances every week.

Another heartbreaking loss came when legendary composer and jazz pianist Yuji Ohno passed away at the age of 84 on May 4 due to natural causes. According to his production company, he peacefully passed away in his sleep.

Sad Month for Anime Fans, Yujiohno

Yuji Ohno was one of the greatest music composers in anime history. Even anime fans who may not know his name have probably heard his music before. He became famous worldwide for creating the iconic soundtrack of Lupin III, especially its legendary opening theme that has remained popular for generations.

He first joined the Lupin III franchise in 1977 during Lupin III: Part II. Since then, his jazz-inspired music became one of the biggest identities of the franchise. Over the years, he continued performing live concerts with his band “Yuji Ohno & Lupintic Five,” later renamed “Lupintic Six.”

Before becoming famous, Ohno developed a love for jazz during high school and later joined Keio University’s Light Music Society. His musical journey slowly transformed him into one of Japan’s most respected composers.

Outside of Lupin III, he also worked on music for several classic anime and films, including:

  • Captain Future
  • Space Adventure Cobra
  • Andromeda Stories
  • Marine Express
  • Prime Rose

His music gave life to action scenes, emotional moments, and unforgettable adventures. Even today, many anime composers are inspired by his jazz-heavy style.
