Today is not a usual day for anime fans around the world. Today, we are talking about news that broke millions of hearts and left the entire anime and manga community in mourning.
The legendary creator of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Kai, and Dragon Ball Super, Akira Toriyama, is no longer with us.
According to an official statement released by Bird Studio, Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1, 2024, due to an acute subdural hematoma.
Bird Studio shared the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened to inform you that manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma.”
The statement also mentioned:
“It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm.”
For anime fans, this loss is difficult to put into words.
The Legacy of Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball is more than just an anime series. It is one of the foundations upon which modern anime was built.
Many of the biggest anime franchises we enjoy today, including Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Fairy Tail, and countless others, have been inspired by Akira Toriyama’s work.
Without Dragon Ball, the anime industry as we know it today might have looked very different.
Toriyama-sensei created a story that inspired generations of fans and creators alike.
The Anime That Introduced Many of Us to Anime
For many fans, Dragon Ball was their first anime.
It was the series that introduced them to the world of anime and sparked a lifelong passion for Japanese storytelling.
I was one of those fans.
As a child, I wanted to be like Goku. I grew up watching Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and later Dragon Ball Super. Like millions of other fans around the world, I learned lessons about determination, friendship, hard work, and never giving up through these characters.
That’s why this news feels so personal to so many people.
We didn’t just lose a creator.
We lost someone whose work helped shape our childhoods.
A Legacy That Changed History
The Dragon Ball manga originally ran from 1984 to 1995, and during that time, Akira Toriyama created one of the most influential manga series in history.
What started as the adventure of a young boy named Goku eventually became a worldwide phenomenon.
Dragon Ball expanded into anime series, movies, video games, merchandise, and inspired countless creators around the globe.
Even today, decades later, new generations continue to discover and fall in love with Dragon Ball.
That is the power of Toriyama-sensei’s storytelling.
Tribute to Akira Toriyama
Akira Toriyama may no longer be with us, but his legacy will live on forever through his work, his characters, and the millions of fans whose lives he touched.
Every time someone watches Goku begin his journey, every time a fan gets excited watching a Super Saiyan transformation, and every time a creator is inspired to draw their own manga because of Dragon Ball, Toriyama-sensei’s legacy continues.
