- What did Roger know that the rest of the world didn’t?
- Why did he choose execution instead of escape?
- Was Roger truly unable to continue because of his illness—or was his death part of something much bigger?
- And what if Roger’s final words weren’t simply the beginning of the Great Pirate Era?
- What if they were the beginning of a plan?
After looking closely at the latest One Piece manga developments, I came to a fascinating possibility: What if Roger intentionally surrendered because he knew his death could set the future in motion? Perhaps Roger understood that he wasn’t the person who would finish the story.
Perhaps he knew that someone else would have to carry his will, discover the truth of the Void Century, reach the One Piece, and ultimately challenge the power sitting above the world. And if that’s true, then Roger’s execution may have been far more important than we ever realized.
Was Gol D. Roger really defeated by his circumstances—or did he deliberately choose how his story would end? Before we begin, remember that this is a One Piece fan theory, not an official explanation from Eiichiro Oda. Some parts are based on confirmed events, while others are speculation and interpretation.

Roger Could Have Escaped Anytime
Before we can understand why Roger never fought Imu and why I believe he may have intentionally surrendered to the Marines, we first need to understand just how powerful Gol D. Roger and his crew really were.
In the very first episode of One Piece, we witness the execution of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.
At first, it looks simple.
The Marines captured the world’s most wanted pirate, and now they were going to execute him.
But the deeper we go into the story, the stranger Roger’s execution becomes.
Roger wasn’t an ordinary pirate.
He was the man who reached Laugh Tale. The man who became the Pirate King. The man whose name was powerful enough to shake the entire world.
And look at what happened to his crew after his death.
Members of the Roger Pirates such as Silvers Rayleigh, Scopper Gaban, and Crocus were able to live for years without the Marines constantly hunting them down.
Rayleigh even lived relatively freely in the Sabaody Archipelago.
So here’s the question:
If Roger had really wanted to disappear, could he have done it?
I believe the answer is probably yes.
Roger had already conquered the Grand Line and possessed an incredibly powerful crew. He had fought some of the strongest pirates in history and survived countless battles.
And most importantly, Roger had something that many of his enemies didn’t have:
Conqueror’s Haki powerful enough to clash with Edward Newgate, the Whitebeard.
Roger didn’t even need a Devil Fruit to stand against one of the strongest men in the world.
And the recent revelations surrounding Rocks D. Xebec make Roger’s strength even more interesting.
Rocks was powerful enough to become the center of one of the most terrifying events in history, forcing Roger and Garp to join forces at God Valley.
Yet Rocks never became the Pirate King.
Roger did.
That difference may tell us something important about Roger that we still don’t fully understand.
So again, the question remains:
Why did Roger surrender?
The God Valley Incident May Have Changed Everything
The recent manga revelations surrounding the God Valley Incident give us another reason to look at Roger’s story differently.
During the incident, the true power of Imu and the horrifying events surrounding God Valley reveal just how deeply the World Government could control and manipulate the truth.
And then comes something extremely important.
The world doesn’t receive the complete story of what happened.
God Valley effectively disappears from history.
Imagine being Roger and witnessing something like that.
You have just seen an event involving some of the strongest people in the world, yet the World Government can simply control the narrative and prevent ordinary people from learning what actually happened.
That would raise an obvious question:
If the World Government can erase God Valley from history, what else have they erased?
What happened during the Void Century?
Who was Joy Boy?
Why does the World Government fear certain knowledge?
And most importantly…
Who is Imu?
Roger may not have had all the answers at God Valley.
But years later, he may have found them.

Laugh Tale May Have Revealed the Truth
Eventually, Roger and his crew reached Laugh Tale.
And whatever they discovered there made the entire crew laugh.
But what exactly did Roger see?
We still don’t know everything.
However, we do know that Roger’s journey to Laugh Tale was connected to the mysteries of the Void Century, Joy Boy, and the true history of the world.
And this is where my theory begins.
What if Roger didn’t simply discover the greatest treasure in the world?
What if he discovered the truth behind the world itself?
Perhaps Roger learned about:
- The Void Century
- Joy Boy’s unfinished promise
- The true nature of the One Piece
- The existence of Imu
- The World Government’s hidden history
- And possibly what needed to happen for the world to finally become free
But then Roger discovered something devastating.
He was too early.
Roger may have realized that he wasn’t the person who was supposed to finish Joy Boy’s story.
Someone else was.
Someone from the next generation.
Someone who would inherit Joy Boy’s will.
Someone who would eventually challenge the power controlling the world.
And if Roger understood that…
What was he supposed to do next?
Roger May Have Chosen His Own Ending
Now comes the most speculative part of this theory.
After returning from Laugh Tale, Roger knew that his illness was going to kill him.
At the same time, his wife Portgas D. Rouge was pregnant with their child, Ace.
So instead of disappearing into the world and dying quietly, what if Roger made a completely different decision?
What if he deliberately surrendered?
Think about it.
Roger knew exactly what would happen if the Marines captured him.
They wouldn’t imprison the Pirate King forever.
They would execute him.
And Roger may have understood something that nobody else did.
His death could become more powerful than his life.
Roger didn’t need to remain alive to change the world.
He needed the world to listen.
Roger Understood His Role
Imagine if Roger had simply disappeared after reaching Laugh Tale.
He could have lived somewhere in hiding.
The World Government would still exist.
Imu would still sit above the world.
The truth about Joy Boy could remain hidden.
And the next generation might never have had a reason to search for the One Piece.
But Roger’s death changed everything.
His execution became a global event.
And Roger knew it would.
He knew Marines would be there.
He knew civilians would be watching.
He knew pirates would hear about it.
He knew the newspapers would spread his final words across the world.
So perhaps Roger realized something incredibly important:
The world didn’t need Roger to remain alive.
The world needed Roger to create hope.
Roger’s Final Words Changed the World
Just before his execution, Roger told the world that his treasure was there for anyone willing to find it. And those words changed history.
The Great Pirate Era began. Thousands of people became pirates. Countless people began searching for the One Piece.
And somewhere among those people was the person Roger may have been waiting for. Monkey D. Luffy. Not because Roger knew Luffy personally.
But because Roger may have understood that eventually, someone would inherit the will necessary to finish what Joy Boy started. Roger’s execution, therefore, may not have been the ending of his story.
It may have been the opening scene of Luffy’s.

So Why Didn’t Roger Fight Imu?
This brings us to the biggest question.
Why didn’t Roger simply fight Imu himself?
If Roger was powerful enough to fight Whitebeard and stand alongside Garp against Rocks, why not take the fight directly to the World Government?
One possibility is that Roger understood something we haven’t completely uncovered yet.
Imu may be far more powerful than anyone Roger had ever encountered. The recent manga revelations have shown abilities and powers surrounding Imu that make the World Government’s hidden ruler an entirely different level of threat.
But there may be an even bigger reason.
Roger may have realized that winning a battle wasn’t the same as changing the world.
- Even if Roger somehow defeated Imu, would the World Government’s system immediately disappear?
- Would the truth of the Void Century automatically reach everyone?
- Would Joy Boy’s promise be fulfilled? Maybe not.
Perhaps Roger understood that the world needed something more than another legendary pirate. It needed the right person, at the right time, with the right inherited will. And if that is true, then Roger fighting Imu himself may have actually been the wrong move.
What If Roger’s Death Was Necessary?
This is where the theory becomes even more interesting. What if Roger and his crew had directly attacked Imu? What if they had tried to destroy the World Government before the world was ready?
They might have suffered the same fate as the Rocks Pirates. Their story could have ended at God Valley. And the world might never have entered the Great Pirate Era.
Instead, Roger chose another path. He sacrificed himself. He turned his execution into a message. He turned his death into a challenge.
And he turned the One Piece into the greatest mystery in the world.
He didn’t tell the world everything.
He simply gave them enough information to begin searching. And that search eventually created the generation that includes Luffy.
Final Thoughts
Of course, none of this is confirmed.
This is a One Piece fan theory, not an official explanation from Eiichiro Oda.
But if the theory is correct, Roger’s execution wasn’t a defeat at all.
It was his final move.
Roger may have understood that he couldn’t be the one to finish Joy Boy’s story.
So instead of fighting a battle he couldn’t win—or perhaps a battle that wasn’t his to fight—he created the circumstances that would eventually bring the right person forward.
Without Roger’s surrender…
- The Great Pirate Era might never have begun.
- The One Piece might have remained forgotten.
- The next generation might never have searched for Laugh Tale.
- And the person capable of challenging Imu might never have appeared.
- Perhaps Roger didn’t lose to the Marines.
- Perhaps he used the Marines.
- He gave them his body…
while using his final moments to give the world something far more dangerous: hope. And maybe that’s the real mystery behind Gol D. Roger’s execution.
Did the Marines execute the Pirate King? Or did the Pirate King use his own execution to start the war that would eventually bring down the World Government?
